Iphone and Iwatch Charging Station

Background: This was made as a Christmas gift for my mom.

Design: I have always been interested in combining translucent materials with wood. There are a ton of designs which feature epoxy or acrylic with wood. For this project epoxy didn’t make sense but I was interested to see how acrylic would complement dark walnut. Due to the cost of Iwatch chargers I was looking for a design where the watch charger would be removable with a fixed phone charger. I had seen some similar looks on Etsy and the design led to this.

Construction: The charging station was made from two pieces of walnut. The circular section had a datto cut into it, and was then cut out on the bandsaw. If I owned a lathe that would have been the preferred method as it would result in a more uniform circle with a better finish, but alas I do not. The acrylic was cut and flame polished to remove cutting marks. The base was then flush trimmed to the acrylic piece. A cavity for the watch charger was carved out of the wood with a dremel and chisel. and then the walnut was flush trimmed to match. All pieces were attached with screws so that cables could be removed. Danish oil was used as a finish.
