Background: The first project in furniture design was to make a bandsaw box. This project was intended to teach basic power tools such as the jointer/planer, and bandsaw. To start we were each given a 8/4 poplar piece that was approximately 14×8″.
Design: I chose to make a leaf for my piece. I was looking for a simple organic shape. The shape couldn’t have sharp edges or lots of thin sections. Another consideration I had to make was to make sure it was a shape that could easily be made to accommodate storage inside. I settled on a leaf which meet all of these criteria and poplar is naturally a greenish color, which helps make the leaf more realistic.
Construction: Power tools used were: bandsaw, jointer, planer. All final shaping was done with a spoke shave and carving knife. The box was finished with danish oil.
